Licence Re-validation

The CAA have recently proposed that Hang-gliding and Paragliding (incl Motor) licences should be re-validated periodically. This is being touted as a safety measure, but we think it is more to do with restricting private aviation in preparation for the expansion of airspace and the increasing use of UAVs.

The periods for re-validation vary depending on the discipline:

Paragliding - every 5 years

Hang-gliding - every 2 years (we are not sure why but presumably because of the more infrequent flying done by HG pilots)

We don't yet know what re-validation will consist of - practical, theory or simply a competency sign-off.

In addition the CAA are proposing annual medical examinations for all pilots over 65 and a statutory maximum flying age (80 for PG, 75 for HG)

The BHPA are still at the consultation process with the CAA, so it is important for us to raise our concerns now.

The committee are formulating the Club's official response, and we will contact all members as soon as we have done so. If you would like to discuss this issue more, please contact any member of the committee or raise it at the meeting on Thursday.
